In the early years of this century, in a flea market in Venice, a handwritten musical manuscript surfaced bearing the name Carlo G(smudge). It contained C17th sacred vocal solos and duets by composers including Carlo G, Quagliati and Caccini, many of which were previously unknown. This manuscript was unusual; it was handwritten and unpublished, and instead of the original simple melodic lines it contained written-out florid ornamentation. This concert explores the gorgeous florid song of the early C17th, and the spine-tingling glimpse into the past that sources like the Carlo G manuscript provide.
